Urs W. Mächler

MASTER LUTHIER & BOWMAKER

I discovered my passion for violin making at an early age in my father’s workshop. This was why, in 1977, I decided to travel to the place where I could learn the Italian art of violin making from scratch – to Cremona, a city which, thanks to the artistry of Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati, has been world-renowned for centuries.

It was here that I not only learned to make instruments, but also received tuition in bow making.

After spending some years in my father’s workshop, I successfully ran my first independent workshop in Verona before gaining my master craftsman’s diploma in Switzerland in 1995 and then moving to Speyer.

Here, I made instruments from my own designs or to patterns from the old Italian masters. Their trademark sound is extremely powerful and pure, with a carrying tone. Only selected tonewood is used, much of which has been seasoned for over 50 years. The instruments are finished in varnish made to old Italian recipes that have been handed down through generations – they can be varnished as antique replicas or in light colour gradations, depending on your wishes.

My bows are based on the patterns of French and English masters from the modern, classical and baroque periods.

For some time now, I and my wife Christiane have wished to move to our family home in the country.

From January 2017, my atelier has been located in Holzhausen am Hünstein (district of Marburg/Biedenkopf).
